Remote learning - Friday 16th July 2021
Good morning 6B and welcome to our final day of remote learning. We can't wait to welcome you back into school on Monday for lots of fun and games at our Year 6 fun day! Remember, you will need to wear suitable clothes for a day of activities in the sun. Don't forget your sun cream.
Today we will have 3 live lessons on MS Teams at 9am, 11am and finally at 1:30pm. Should you not be able to access these live lessons, please see the links below for today's new learning.
Maths
In our final maths lesson of the week, we are going to revisit number and look at consolidating our place value knowledge. We are going to be identifying values of 5 digit numbers and looking at how we can display this in a number of ways.
Literacy
Our final literacy lesson of the week will see us analyse elements of Phillip Pullmans 'I was a rat!'. We will analyse the authors use of language to see how this has an impact on the reader.
https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-analyse-the-authors-use-of-language-cnj3cr
Spanish
In this lesson, we will learn some basic greetings and how to say our name, as well as some simple vocabulary to describe ourselves.

PE
PE is essential in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Whilst we are all at home self isolating, it has never been more vital to ensure we remain active. In today's PE lesson, we are continuing our work on athletics ahead of the Olympics by focussing on jumping and throwing. We can't wait to hear how you've got on with this... There could be a few Olympians in the making. A few of these activities require equipment such as hoops. If you haven't got any hoops at home (I know I haven't) you can improvise by using household items such as towels and socks.
Remote learning - Wednesday 14th July 2021

Within our literacy lesson, we are going to continue looking at 'I was a rat!' by Phillip Pullman. In this lesson, we will answer retrieval and inference questions on the opening chapter.
https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-answer-questions-on-the-text-part-1-cru68t
Reading for pleasure
In this lesson, we will develop reading for pleasure through book recommendations. We will focus on poetry, picture books and non-fiction. We will then generate our own recommendations to share with others. I can't wait to see all your recommendations - I am due another book to read.

Remote learning - Monday 12th July 2021
Good morning 6B, and welcome back to remote learning. I hope you enjoyed the match last night. I'm sure that you agree that the England team covered themselves in glory but unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be. We can now look forward to the World Cup in 18 months.
Maths
Today, we will again be continuing our maths work on calculating the area and perimeter of simple compound shapes. If you have any difficuluties with this, please either message Mrs Dodgson on MS Teams or e-mail myself, Mr Jones, on our teachers e-mail. Today's lesson is going to require you to build upon that knowledge from Friday's lesson in order to find the perimeter of composite shapes.
Here is the link for our lesson.
https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/calculate-the-perimeter-of-composite-shapes-6gvp4c
Literacy
In literacy, we will be looking at 'I was a rat!' written by Phillip Pullman. This first session will introduce you to the book and look at the first chapter in order to engage you with the text. I'm sure you will love this book... I know I do! Let me know what you think on MS Teams.
https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-engage-with-the-text-6mw38c
Reading for pleasure
In our reading session today, we will be reflecting on our favourite books, paying particular attention to the different genres we enjoy. In this session there is a great opportunity to create our own reading log.
https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-develop-reading-for-pleasure-74v3cd
Art and design
In this lesson, we will learn about and evaluate the work of some artists and craftspeople. We will experiment with decoupage and will use our sketchbook to gather ideas about materials and techniques which will inform our own making. This lesson includes some physical activity and equipment beyond pen, paper or pencil. Please make sure your child is adequately supervised.
Should you need any further support, please contact either myself, Mr Jones, through our teacher e-mail or Mrs Dodgson through MS Teams.
Remote learning - Friday 9th July 2021
Hello 6B, and welcome to remote learning. I hope this finds you well and that you are still managing to wear red and white to help us prepare for the final on Sunday. Football is coming home!
Maths
Today, we will be continuing our maths work on calculating the area and perimeter of simple compound shapes. We were really impressed with how you got on in yesterday's practical lesson - it was amazing to see everyone working collaboratively. Today's lesson is going to require you to build upon that knowledge from yesterday's lesson in order to find the both the area and perimeter for some rather challenging shapes.
Here is the link for our lesson.
Literacy
In literacy, we will be continuing our work on complex sentences, thinking back to our work with George. It will be important that we think back to our subordinating conjunction song which we have learnt throughout the year. I will put a link for this below.
Remember, when we open with a subordinate clause it is imperative that we add a comma and main clause following this, in order for it to make sense.
https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-explore-complex-sentences-60t66c

Reading for pleasure
Who is your favourite character in your favourite book? Mine is definitely Stanley Yelnats - I love it when he drives Mr Sir's van into one of the many holes on Camp Green Lake. In this session, we will look at your favourite book character and revise the meaning of empathy. We will look at recommended reads and character traits in order to describe your favourite character.
Art and design
In this lesson, we will learn about different types of paper crafts. We will gather resources to inform our design ideas and will develop our practical skills by painting a design which we will to add to a folding fan.

Remote learning – Thursday 10th June 2021
Hello Year 6, and welcome to remote learning. Today, we will be continuing our maths work on identifying equivalent fractions and then proceeding to simplify fractions, where possible – we were really impressed with the learning in yesterday’s lesson. In literacy, we will be continuing our work on our evaluation text, focussing on one of our favourite topics… CHOCOLATE! And finally, in music we will be building upon our prior knowledge and be learning how to understand pulse and rhythm within a piece of music.
Maths
Today in maths, we will be continuing to look at both equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions, using what we learnt in yesterday’s lesson.
Please see the link below for today’s lesson.
https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/fractions-recognising-equivalent-fractions-1-crt36e
Literacy
As we now know, a product must be evaluated before it can be made for human consumption/purchase and it is our job over the coming weeks to evaluate some of our favourite household items. This week, we are evaluating one of Britain’s most-loved chocolate bars, the Dairy Milk. In yesterday’s lesson we gathered some key information surrounding the nutritional content of a Dairy Milk and compared that to its main competitors. We also compared the price, size and popularity, according to an official poll. One thing we didn’t focus on was the appearance of the chocolate bar and in particular, its wrapper.
Today’s task is to look at the positives and negatives of the Dairy Milk wrapper and suggest improvements. Use your research skills to look at the wrappers of its main competitors (as discussed yesterday) and see how it compares. Do you think it attracts consumers? Is the font appealing? Do you think it needs a pattern or a logo to make it more appealing? Use the sheet below to identify the positives and the negatives of the wrapper and then have a go at designing your own new and improved wrapper.

Do they a special or unusual power? We want to know EVERYTHING about them! Click the link below to access our super lesson on reading. We cant wait to hear about all of your amazing favourite characters.
Music
As we all know, this week is music and drama week. In yesterday's lesson we explored the art of freeze frames and related that to scenes from WW2. Today in music, we are going to be exploring pulse and rhythm, which we will then be implementing in our drama lessons. Follow the attached link in order to access our lesson.

PE
Please see the attached link for today’s PE lesson.
Dear parent/carer,
Firstly, and most importantly, we hope you are all safe and well at home and thank you for your patience whilst we have been putting together the remote learning arrangements for year 6.
As schools have now closed to the majority of children, it is important that your children continue their learning from home through their Microsoft Teams account. Your child will receive up to 4 hours of education (as per the latest DFE guidance) each day using Teams and this will be a combination of ‘live meets’ with their teachers, some videos, some presentations and some independent tasks. Each week we will provide:
- A daily maths session
- A daily literacy session
- A daily shared reading session with the teacher using our class text, Refugee by Alan Gratz
- A weekly science session
- Afternoon sessions that will include all of our foundation subjects based on our class text
- A weekly PSHE session
- A weekly Computing session
The children in year 6 have all had some experience of using Microsoft Teams already and they have all been given a username and password which you should find in their reading diaries. To access the learning, they will have had to have downloaded the Teams app to their device and used their username and password to log in. Once in the app, they will see they have been made part of one of two teams:
Home learning 6B and 6C
Or
Home Learning 6J and 6W
Within their team, if they look at the calendar, they will see the ‘live meetings’ they have been invited to. To join their teachers and friends, they will click on join meeting. We are confident that most of our children know how to use Teams but if you do have any problems, please contact us at teachers@underwoodwest.cheshire.sch.uk using your child’s name and class as the subject matter.
These arrangements have been put into place to ensure that all of our children have access to a quality education but we do know that every family’s circumstances and access to electronic devices is different so we will try to support you all as much as possible. Children will be able to access the learning at a time that is convenient to them if they are sharing devices with siblings.
We would appreciate your support in encouraging your children to engage in these home learning sessions but if you have any problems, please let us know either via the teacher email address above or by sending us a message in Teams; teachers and support staff will be available between the hours of 8.30 am and 3.15pm. If you can’t contact us within these hours, we will respond to queries the following working day.
If your child is unwell and is unable to attend remote learning sessions, please inform the school office on 01270 260580 by no later than 8:30am, or as soon as possible should your child become unwell during the school day.
We are looking forward to seeing all of our fabulous children soon, stay safe and look after each other.
Many thanks, from all of the year 6 team
