A message from Miss Whittaker for Class 3Wh...
Last half term we were learning about Egypt and as part of a writing project on explanations, we experimented with mummifying tomatoes. The children loved cleaning and preparing them and were so excited to see what would happen but unfortunately we went into lockdown before we were able to look!

So this week I took them out, look at the photos to see what happened. The tomatoes were completely dried out but still had their bright red colour and hadn’t gone rotten. Ask them about the steps of mummification or maybe have a go at home using these instructions.

Hi Everyone

Hope you are all well and staying safe.

Please find below some activities based on the Islamic religion looking at the life of the Prophet Muhammad. If you can listen to the stories and complete the activities I would love to see them, so if you can add these to the teachers email page and say that it's for RE then I can see what you have done. Please don't feel that you have to do them all in the same week, you can complete it over a few weeks.

Take care and hope to see you soon.

Reading activity - Lets read a different myth today and see if there is anything similar to Pandora's Box

Writing activity - Today I would like you to plan your own version of Pandora's Box. Use the planning sheet and prompts to help you. Remember... The better your plan is the easier your writing is! Use ideas from earlier in the week and some of your own ideas to make your myth plan.

This week can you spend some time learning these spellings? Write them on cards and stick them up around the house so you can look at them - Stick them on the bathroom mirror, the fridge door, up the stairs and even on the garden fence!

Reading activity - Read another myth and answer the questions.

When you're reading - look out for any good sentences openers or vocabulary you could magpie for your writing!

Writing activity - Today is the day to become a myth writer! I would like you to read Pandora's Box again and look really carefully at your plan (you might want to add or changes parts). Then I would like you to have a go at writing your version of the myth. Use your plan and the checklist below to help you. Remember to read back each paragraph to check it makes sense.

You could even draw your own page border around the edge of your pages and decorate it with all the characters and items from inside Pandora's Box.

Please email your finished myth to me (teachers@underwoodwest.cheshire.sch.uk) so I can see what excellent writing you have been doing. I will share them on the website for others to read too!

When you have finished - self assess your work and learning about myths using the picture below.

SCIENCE

This week we would like you to understand the term 'skeleton' and let’s see if you can categorise animals as vertebrates or invertebrates. Read through the powerpoint - Types of skeletons - completing the quiz questions.

Then complete the sorting activity by placing the animal under the correct type of skeleton they have.

Remember:

• Endoskeleton means the skeleton is on the inside.

• Exoskeleton means the skeleton is on the outside.

• Hydrostatic skeleton means the animal has no bones.

SPANISH

Lets practice some of the Spanish we've been learning so far this year. Have a go at the activities and use the songs to help!

Writing:

We have been working really hard to improve our sentence openers in Year 3. (It can be very boring if every sentence starts with 'The') Last time we wrote reports we used GENERALISERS to start our sentences. Practice writing some sentences about your theme using the generalisers from the wheel below. For example:

All cats have four legs and 2 ears.

Generally cats like to sleep a lot.

Now have a go at writing your non-chronological report by turning your notes from your plan into sentences and check they make sense. Remember to use generalisers, adjectives and adverbs to make your writing exciting. When you have finished the writing add your own diagrams and pictures to match each paragraph. Don’t forget to check you have used the features off your checklist!

Once you’ve finished and checked your writing – It is time to edit and improve with a different colour. Here are some things to look for when editing:

  • Have you included everything off your checklist?
  • Does each sentences make sense and is it correctly punctuated?
  • Have you started sentences with generalisers where possible?
  • Have you checked your spellings?
  • Are your letters formed correctly and joined neatly?
  • Have you up-levelled word choices?

Use these to help you:

Science week beginning 30.03.20  Week 2

Have a look at your food diary which we asked you to keep.  Do you eat a wide range of vitamins and minerals?  Is there certain vitamins and minerals you need to eat more of or less of? Have a look at some food packages and see what nutrients and vitamins they have.  Do any of them surprise you? Activity.

Read through the power point - Amount of Nutrition - look at the diets of the different animals. What is the same? What is different? Can you complete the activity below:

Year 3

Welcome to Year 3.

Below we have added daily arithmetic, maths, maths activities for those children whom attend Mrs Sproston's math group, daily writing activities, daily reading comprehension and a weekly science lesson.  We have also included a project for the children to do over the next few weeks, so please choose the activities in any order.  You can either download and print off the activities or download them and complete them on paper. Please email pictures of work completed by the children to teachers@underwoodwest.cheshire.sch.uk. We are missing the children greatly and would love to be updated on what they are doing.

We also recommend teaching you children life skills during this time. For example - gardening, housework, telling the time, counting money and other activities you can do safely indoors.

As children won't be able to change their reading books in school, we highly recommend logging on to Oxford Owl, where you can access  lots of free eBooks.

 www.oxfordowl.co.uk

You will need to log on using the following log in details:

Miss Wilson's class:  Username:  misswilsonUWA        Password: reading1

Miss Whittaker's class:  Username misswhittaker    Password: reading

I have attached here a sheet which explains how to log in if you have any difficulties.

The children have also been working hard to improve their timetables and spellings so these websites are great for practicing:

Science

Our new topic is called Animals including Humans! We will put a weekly lesson up for you to have ago at.

Lesson 1

Types of Nutrition

Use the power point above to help you.

Why do we need food?  Write down your ideas and then look at slide 4 of the Nutrition power point.

How do plants get food?   How do animals get food?  Write down your ideas and then look at slides 5 and 6 of the power point.  What would happen if animals tried to get their food the same as plants?

  1. Write a sentence explaining the difference between how animals get their food and plants.
  2. Look at the rest of the presentation.

TASK: Can you match food groups with their names?

For next week, keep a diary of all the food and drinks you have each day.

Monday 23rd March Writing

Look and read the power-point on Kennings. What key features are used to create a kenning? On the example of the Kenning highlight the determiners, nouns, adjectives and verbs.

Create a checklist of what a good kenning poem looks like. This will help you when you are writing your own!

Tuesday 24th March Writing

Look over and read again the power-point on Kennings. What can you remember about what a good one looks like?

Look at the 5 examples of kenning poems. Kenning poems are a way of describing something using clues rather than saying what it is. See if you can match each poem to what it is describing.

Wednesday 25th March Writing

Look over and read again the power-point on Kennings. Today we are going to think about our SPaG skills. Look at the list of nouns and adjectives below. When we add a suffix to a word, there are different rules to follow. Look carefully and see if you can add the suffix –er to all the words.

CHALLENGE!

Can you use those words in a sentence about yourself?

Thursday 26th March Writing

Before we write our own poem it’s a good idea to plan and gather ideas. Kenning poems give clues about something without saying what it it. Think of something you would like to write a poem about – it might be an animal, someone in your family, your friend, your teacher or something you find outside. Then make notes about all the things it does (verbs) and what is looks like (adjectives) to help you.

Here is an example:

Friday 27th March Writing

Now it is time to use all the ideas from yesterday to write your very own kenning poem. You may even want to do more than one poem. Here is an example:

A

biscuit

cruncher

A

purr

maker

A

bird

catcher

A

tree

climber

A

quiet

hunter

When you have finished draw a picture of what your poem is about. Ask your parents to take a picture and send it to your teacher on the email address provided! (teacher@underwoodwest.cheshire.sch.uk - remember to put your full name as the subject so your teacher can find it!)

GOOD LUCK! I can’t wait to read your ideas. :)
